The Recent History of Obesity

The American obesity epidemic is a topic which has been increasingly controversial since the begining of the American databasing of obesity cases in 1985.To clarify, obesity is defined as somebody who is extremely overweight, especially: weighing more than 20% (for men) or 25% (for women) over their ideal weight determined by height and build; or, having a body mass index over 30kg / m (approximately 22lbs per foot). It is obvious that this disease is abnormal. However, there is a deeper issues within the growing population of these people which is swiftly and silently killing a large portion of the humans globally.

It is commonly known that the asian diet is historically associated with a longer life coupled with less instances of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Why is this? It is because historically Asian cultures have selected foods which are lower on the food chain, containing less "bad fats", or HDL's, and rich in "good fats", or LDL's. On the contrary, the modern American diet has become filled with meats containing large amounts of fat and cholesterol which leads to rapid decline of heart associated functions and obesity.

All of that said, the recent history of obesity must be discussed to provide insite into why this American epidemic has turned into a global pandemic. What has happened in recent years with the American influence on global lifestyles more and more countries have begun to "live like us, eat like us, and die like us" (Dr. Dean Ornish). Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers are all begining to take effect on a global scale which are statistically shown as a result of a high fat, high cholesterol diet. Fortunately, these diseases are preventable and reducable for 95% of the population. The attached video has some very helpful information regarding this pandemic and the statistical data showing the progression of obesity.

NOTES:

In one generation Asia has gone form having one of the lowest instances of death associated with Cardiovascular diease to one of the highest.

High density lipoproteins (HDL's) are fats which are saturated with hydrogen ions, hence the term saturated fats, resulting in a more rigid structure reducing artierial flexibility. Low Density lipoproteins (LDL's) are fats which are not saturated with these hydrogen ions allowing for a less rigid strucure thereby providing less interference with the vital pathway of blood flow to the heart and the brain.

African pathology studies show just as many deaths from cardiovascular disease as from HIV/AIDS.

Cardiovascular disease has become the largest killer globally within one generation.

This chart shows the change in gene expression from less diseasing preventing genes being expressed, to more of these genes expressed.

Obesity Prevention

As previously stated obesity and the associated diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers are completely preventable in 95% of the cases. In addition to prevention 95% of the cases are reversible through a change in lifestyle.

The obvious factors are responsible for prevention and reversion of obesity and associated diseases. Changes in diet and exercise in effected patients can help reduce risk, and reverse effects. Furthermore, stress management and loveing more are very influential in longer term health associated with obesity, cardiovascular disease, and the other associated diseases. Can you think of any ways that you can immediately help in your lifestyle improvements? If its as easy as loving more than I hope everybody is able to establish a regimine for this preventive measure.

The good doctors at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute have been able to generate significant data regarding diet and lifestyle changes and the influence these factors have on altering physiological factors associated with blood flow and in turn oxyge to the brain, the skin, the heart, and the prostate. This increased blood flow has allowed for the provides a positive effect on the size of the brain, and the amount of new brain cells produced. It has show to reverse the gene expression causing prostate cancer and breast cancer. There have been over 50 disease preventing genes identitified as being more often expressed than the disease causing genes. All as the result of change in diet, change in exercise, stress management, and loving more.

That being said out American companie are leading the charge in the changing dietary habits of the world population. As the worlds leading provider of the recent historical data regarding the obesity pandemic American research scientists are working with the nations leading food suppliers including McDonalds, and Pepsi Co, just to name a few, to redirect their marketing efforts into the healthy arena of food supply. Although the damage is evident, fortunately the damage is proving to be reversible. So the next time you are in the store grabbing a snack or grocery shopping remember these facts about the way to reduce the instance of obesity, and extend your life.
