Mothers Day Gift Ideas for New Mothers - Guys what to buy and what not to buy!

Sometimes Mothers Day gifts can bring that special woman tears of joy, and other times it can bring just plain tears. Guys understand how important it is to buy their special woman a gift to remember. But what should you do for their first Mother’s Day?

Because I am a guy I understand that when you don’t do the appropriate research, questioning, asking of friends, etc… for a special occasion it is very difficult to select a gift that will make an impression. Therefore, I have simplified it for you by researching the topic and selecting some of the best and worst mother’s day gifts women have received in the past. Now obviously it would be very easy to just pick out some expensive jewelry or piece of clothing (especially shoes) to provide a memorable gift for the mother of your first child. However, not all of us have a large enough budge to allowing us to purchase gifts with large price tags. Here are some gift ideas which worked in the past for guys on and off budgets.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad

It doesn’t really matter which category you fall into, a special gift is your obligation to the woman in your life. Most of the time it’s not the amount of money you spend but the amount of thought and care you put into selecting, or creating your gift. These gifts are separated by total cost, and total time.

Photo Collage Ideas

“Free” gifts

Picture collage of your baby’s first year:

A picture collage is something you and your significant other can enjoy for many years. This is low cost, and will definitely make your woman smile. A well done picture collage will take some time to complete but there must be some cost involved to achieve a positive result. Some added benefits to a picture collage include. Future embarrassment for your child when friends around, first prom, first relationships etc…  Also, you can use this same gift for your mother, killing two birds with one stone.

Your first child:

I only include this because one woman I spoke to actually said this. Her husband might actually be the luckiest guy I know. You know who you are! This is what she said to me when I asked “What would you like for your first mother’s day? She responded, “My first child. She was born on May 8th, and we came home from the hospital on Mother’s day!” LUCKY!!!!!!

Low cost gifts

A picture frame:

This option can be as low cost or as high cost as you select. If you only have digital photos of your new baby you can buy a digital picture frame to include many photos in a collage. Another option is to go to a discount store like Target or Wal-Mart. If you decide on the frame there are a lot of really cool options be sure to take your time and select something that really suits your mate. Also, be sure you include a picture in the frame. Don’t make her work for her gift.

Total cost: $10 - $100+

Your child’s foot and hand prints on canvas:

This is a gift idea which will definitely bring many smiles to your faces for many years. If you decide to do it yourself be sure to use safe paint. Otherwise, for a fee you can hire a professional to do this for you. If you have a college near-by with an art program you can put up a poster with your contact info in the student lounge to receive some leads. This should accomplish a professional look for a better price. Remember to frame the art. If you are sneaky enough to pull this off without your lady noticing then you’re a magician!

Total cost: $10 - $100+

Selecting a baby photo!

Medium to high cost gifts

It is easy to select these items. You know what your woman likes so if you’re up to it pony up and drop the cash. I have decided to forgo the obvious choices, and have included some medium to high cost ideas which may not initially come to mind.

Gift certificates to a local spa:

Gift certificates are always a safe choice as you allow your woman to select the time, date, and preferred treatment. Women love spas and as a good day at the spa can alleviate many of the stressors of being a new mom.

Total cost: your choice, make sure you buy a large enough gift certificate to receive a few hours at the spa.

Lessons for a sport or hobby she may enjoy:

This is another individual gift idea that is subjective to your woman. This gift is “thoughtful and therapeutic”. It will give her some time away from the home to relax and enjoy her much deserved free time. As a side note, be sure you are willing to baby sit for the evening, or morning, or even multiple occasions for which you may be signing up for. Some cool ideas I heard were surfing lessons, and photography classes.

Total cost: too subjective, but prepare for $100+ minimum

    Definite NO NO’s

Here are some quotes from women who were, needless to say, not happy with their gifts!

“”My husband decided to go out of state on mother’s day weekend, and it wasn’t entirely for work. I was seven months pregnant with our second child.” – This is obviously the “comfort zone” factor at its finest (or worst).

“A set of pots” – She had to work to complete the gift, never make her work for a gift!

“I asked my husband what we should do for our first mother’s day”. He looked a bit perplexed and said, “Well you’re not my mother.” – NO NO, come on buddy.

“An apron” – NO NO, don’t make her work or give the impression of required work.

“A screen door” – NO NO, no utilities or home maintenance supplies.

    Final Thought's

Selecting a mothers day gift does not have to be as stressful as you may think. Although, you are selecting a gift for a new mother, and the pressure is on, always remember that she is yours. You know her better than anybody else in the world, and all she wants is a thoughtful gift. If you take the time to select the right gift for your woman, she will be happy. Hopefully this information can help you to narrow the choices, or even inspire some original thought. For you last minute shoppers, as most of you probably are, GET TO WORK!
